Legal & Compliance are a diverse team of professionals. They cover Legal, Compliance, Financial Crime, and Regulatory Affairs. The interest of our customers, employees, shareholders and communities are at the core of how we operate.

Our Legal colleagues ensure that the profile of legal risk management remains a priority. Working closely with the business, they provide a high quality and cost-effective legal service. They are also constantly improving appropriate frameworks, practices and policies.

Compliance is an assurance function, independent from the business. They work closely with other assurance functions, such as governance and risk, to promote a positive compliance culture. This helps us to achieve good customer and market conduct. They ensure adherence to external rules and laws and internal policies and standards. This is accomplished through developing internal controls, monitoring business activity, providing advice on regulatory matters and identifying regulatory risks.

The Regulatory Policy and Governance team are responsible for maintaining an open and co-operative relationship with the Regulators. This includes visits, information requests and regulatory returns. Regulatory Policy provides a complete overview of regulatory proposals and initiatives impacting Santander Consumer Finance. Included in this unit is the responsibility for Corporate Governance. This involves; the maintenance and enhancement of governance procedures and protocols, advising committee members of the implications of proposed policies and the maintenance of requirements within Santander Consumer Finance.

Our Internal Audit unit is responsible for liaising with Santander UK internal auditors. They also coordinate the internal audit process. This consists of notice of an intended audit, performing audit fieldwork, issuing reports and delivering and closing recommendations. A key role of Internal Audit is to ensure that the recommendations are closed within agreed deadlines. Monitoring the progress towards completion, escalating issues and reporting to senior management is essential.

Quality Assurance are an independent team within Regulatory Control. They are responsible for providing assurance to Senior Management in relation to agent proficiency, regulatory adherence and fair customer outcomes. This is achieved through the monitoring of call centre calls and customer complaints. Their approach is to provide support to operational staff through timely and effective feedback – this aims to improve ability in their role, enhancing customer outcomes.
