There’s no doubt – the number of electric vehicles is on the rise and is only set to increase. With multiple benefits for your surroundings, your wallet and future you – check out our 5 top reasons to get behind the wheel of an EV.

1. Lower emissions and a quieter drive

In the battle to reduce our individual carbon footprints, EVs are a powerful double weapon. They produce no exhaust emissions, so drivers are straight away making a significant reduction in their carbon footprint. Combine this with the potential to power your car or van by renewable energy sources, and you can reduce your footprint further. Charging your EV with solar or wind power enhances its environmental benefits and promotes clean energy use.

EVs also help to reduce noise pollution (a sometimes-overlooked benefit). Electric motors are nearly silent, so you’ll enjoy a smoother and quieter driving experience.

2. Lower maintenance costs

From a maintenance point of view there’s much to like on the EV front. They don’t need oil changes or emissions tests, and thanks to regenerative braking systems the level of wear and tear on their bakes is low. Add to this the fact that they have fewer moving parts than combustion engine counterparts, and your average maintenance bill for an EV could be lower than a petrol engine equivalent.

3.Convenient to charge

There’s no shortage of petrol stations in the UK, but who has a fuel pump on the driveway?! By contrast, it’s easy to have a home charging point installed – this typically costs between £800 and £1,500,1 depending on the model and who carries out the installation for you. And then it’s just a matter of plugging in at the end of the day and waking up to a fully charged vehicle. Sadly, the Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (which provided grants for home charger installations) has now closed, but a similar scheme for people living in flats or renting offers up to £350 off the cost of installation until 31 March 2026.

4. Great driving experience

If you thought an electric vehicle was a dull choice, think again. EVs deliver power immediately, offering fast acceleration and a responsive, enjoyable ride. And thanks to a low centre of gravity (courtesy of that heavy battery, firmly mounted into the chassis) they have great handling.

5. Future-proof your driving

As of 2030, no new petrol or diesel vehicles in will be allowed to be produced in the UK, with the government announcing a £2.3 billion investment package to boost manufacturing of zero-emission vehicles and to help people make the switch to electric. Hybrid vehicle days are also numbered, with a hard stop on manufacture in 2035. So, the move to electric is inevitable – perhaps now’s the time to make the switch?
